Kapas Island and Gemia Island are two small but beautiful islands popular for beach tourism in weekends and holidays. It can be reached after a thirty minutes speedboat trip from mainland Marang, just south of Kuala Terangganu. The name Pulau Kapas translates as Cotton Island to the few cotton trees that have been found across the island. It is a backpackers paradise with cheap accommodations and mostly known by beach lovers, sunbathers, swimmers and snorkelers. Renting wind surfing materials, kayaks, canoes and other water activities are easily arranged.
Its clear emerald waters are filled with fish and popular for snorkeling. Diving can be excellent here, but most scuba divers choose to visit the more offshore islands since they tend to have better visibilities and more fish. However, excellent coral formations and bright colored marine species are common here as well. There are even a WWII wreck and some illegal fishing trawlers that were scuttled as an artificial reef.
