Pulau Bidong or Pulau Bidung Laut is a small island consisting out of islets and rocky outcrops. It has been a Vietnamese refugee camp in the 70s and 80s and only been opened to tourists in 1999. Vietnamese workers tried to escape Vietnam in fully packed but small rowing and fishing boats, trying to make the long journey across the rough South China Sea in search for a better life.
Nowadays, Pulau Bidong can be reached by boat from Merang or from the southern tip of Pulau Redang. It is an isolated island group not very well known to scuba divers mainly because it is not easy to get there. Excellent diving can be found in the clear waters between Pulau Yu Besar and Pulau Yu Kecil. The sloping fringe reefs of Pulau Gelok are notorious amongst snorkelers. It is just a matter of time that Bidong has surrendered to mass diving tourism.
