Penang is one of the more popular islands off the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia. Penang or Pulau Pinang (meaning island of the areca nut tree) has been a trading island for many centuries. Its inhabitants are from Western, Indian, Chinese and Southeast Asian origin and offer different cultures, dining and traditions. Penang can be reached by bridge from mainland Perai and you can easily board a ferry to Langkawi and Sumatra from here.
Georgetown, its capital, is a vibrant city with must sees such as the Armenian Quarter with its famous Chinese temple Khoo Kongsi. Batu Ferringhi is where many tourists reside and has become an area with many hotels, bars, restaurants and shopping. Other highlights include Gurney Drive, the local markets of Air Itam and the Kek Lok Si Temple with its thirty meter high statue of Kuan Yin, goddess of mercy. Teluk Bahang is a nice village known for its nice park that is often used for locals to escape the crowds. If you like temples, Penang is the place to go with many shrines all around the island.
Most dive and snorkeling boats offer trips to Payar Marine Park, fifty kilometers to the north, offering much better coral reefs and marine life. There is a small observatory, mooring platforms, glass bottom boat tours and pristine white beaches. You can walk the short trail into Payar's lush rainforests. There are not many dive sites worth mentioning around Penang.
