Lankayan Island is a small isolated idyllic tropical island reached in only half an hour by boat from Sandakan, east Sabah. It is one of the frontiers for diving with only one dive resort that only opened in 1997, Lankayan Island Dive Resort. Its shallow reefs are famous for its macro organisms and exceptional critters that can be found. You are most likely to see the famous dugong as it lives around the shores of Lankayan. You will also find many hawksbill and green turtles, since the area is close to Turtle Island Park and the Turtle Sanctuary at Pulau Selingan. Another sight is the whale sharks that pass here in April. There are three wrecks (Mosquito Fleet, Jetty Wreck, Lankayan Wreck) often surrounded with animal life such as manatees, turtles, jacks, barracudas, jawfish, grouper and coral shrimps. There are also many examples of sponges, feather stars, seafans and strands of hard coral.
