Tioman is very popular amongst local Malaysians and Singaporeans especially during the weekend and holidays, crowds can form. The island is covered in dark green rainforest, mountain cliffs topped with mist, waterfalls and many streams, giving it a mysterious atmosphere. You can visit the Asah Waterfalls, book a jungle hiking tour or spent a day kayaking or canoeing on its bright blue and calm waters. Tioman Island and all its nearby smaller islets, named Pahang Marine Park, has even been rated as one of the top ten best islands in the world and its beauty became worldwide known after the blockbuster South Pacific in 1958. You can easily get there by boat from Mersing, Johor and from Tanjung Gemok, Pahang but there is also a small airport at the island. Many pre-booked boat tours from Singapore can also be arranged. There are many resorts, bars and some of the whitest beaches in Malaysia. Some of the better developed towns around Tioman Island are Tekek village, Juara Beach, Salang, Genting, Mukut, Ayer Batan and Teluk Nipah.
Local legend talks about a Chinese dragon princess that wanted to visit her lover in Singapore but once she decided to rest in the South China Sea, she was overwhelmed by its beauty and decided to take the form of Tioman, with imagination resembling a dragon.
Its sheltered and shallow waters are perfect for trainee divers and snorkelers. More offshore, near the islands of Tulai, Chebeh, Sepoi and Labas are deeper more exhilarating dive sites to be found. Walls, pinnacles and strong currents provide some of the bigger marine species. Healthy nutrient waters offer stunning anemone formations and shipwrecks filled with fish. This is without doubt a gem for diving, probably best in the Peninsula of Malaysia, whether it is diving, snorkeling, beaching or sunbathing.
