Pulau Langkawi of the western Malaysian Peninsula is one of the most popular islands in Malaysia. Its name translates from Malay as Eagle Red, obvious named after the many red eagles that live on Lankawi Island. Kuah Town can be reached easily by ferry from Kuala Kedah, Perlis, Penang and even Satun in Thailand.
There are plenty of activities and tours. Oriental Village is a small touristic town with some traditional Malaysian architecture and the beginning point of the more than two kilometer long Langkawi Cable Car that brings you to heights with spectacular views. You can explore Langkawi's Underwater World, a huge aquarium offering more than 4000 different marine species that live in the waters throughout Malaysia. Furthermore, you can take a look at a crocodile farm or enjoy its stunning natural environment with some secluded small waterfalls and the top of mountain Gunung Raya. Nearby islands such as Pulau Dayang, Pulau Tuba, Pulau Singa Besar and even Tarutao Island can be pleasant day activities. Some of the better beaches are Cenang Beach with its long boulevard and many shops. On top of all this you can easily arrange trips to all the highlights of southern Thailand.
Allthough Langkawi is the well known island filled with tourists; the four islands that make up Pulau Payar are known for its sublime scuba diving and snorkeling. It is only thirty kilometers south of Langkawi and many touts and tour operators will try to book you on one of their diving tours. Payar has a floating platform with an underwater observatory. If you like sitting in the sun, taking a drink, relax with a book or join one of the glass bottom boat tours to visit the nearby reefs, you will have plenty of possibilities. Although it is not the best dive destination in Malaysia, you will be amazed by its colors and fish life.
