The Japanese tanker Gyoshin Maru or Varella Wreck was converted to an armed merchant ship and sunk after hitting a rock east of Pulau Berhala on 19th December 1944. The wreck sits on the sandy bottom at around 20 meters, in 2 sections; the stern section is badly broken up while the bow section is in relative good condition. She sits upright, with the shallowest point only 11 meters below the surface. There are two anti-aircraft gun emplacements sitting upright too, but be aware there is also a lot of unexploded ordinance around the wreck! There are swimthroughs in both parts of the wreck, but only suitable for experienced wreck divers.
